Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration
"One Mile of Smiles" Parade
"Those who will not get into step will find that the parade has passed them by." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Oh, the joy of watching a parade go by... bands playing and marching with precision, uniformed drum majors and majorettes high stepping to the beat of the rhythm section, decorative floats splendidly displaying their coordinated colors, all highlighting their interpretive themes. Marching groups consisting of aspiring young pre-teens honing their skills, while some mothers become caught up in the moment, joining the ranks. All of this is to celebrate a national holiday-Juneteenth.
The “One Mile of Smiles” Parade is routed through the heart of Missouri City, home of the greatest concentration of Fort Bend County’s African Americans population. Businesses, schools, elected officials, organizations, fraternities and sororities participate with one common objective, celebrating the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation.
Over three thousand on-watchers assemble along the parade route, waiving and cheering.
